The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has derived at a conclusion aimed at enhancing sustainable water access in Zwedru, Pleebo, and Greenville cities following initial technical assessments which established that they are faced with severe water supply challenges due to non-existent water infrastructure, population growth, and unreliable urbanization.
With funding from the government of Liberia, sourced under the ARREST agenda, LWSC is set to commence the trio Water Projects for the Southeastern Liberia’s economic hubs — Zwedru, Pleebo, and Greenville — are considered critical to regional trade, agriculture, and industrial growth. This project entails a comprehensive rehabilitation and expansion of water supply systems, integrating solar-powered solutions in these cities to ensure sustainable, reliable, and safe water access, directly supporting public health, economic productivity, and rural- urban development.
A high power LWSC delegation led by Hon. T. Wilson Gaye, Deputy Managing Director for Administration will break grounds this weekend in the Southeastern cities to rehabilitate and modernize existing water infrastructures in Zwedru and Greenville and construct new water supply system in Pleebo. The project when completed will serve over 30,000 residents, commercial, and institutional users by 2026, scaling to 60,000 by 2035. It will also reduce waterborne diseases and boost economic productive in the region.
In Zwedru, the water supply rehabilitation aims to restore 10.18 km of damaged pipelines, reconnect over 600 households and 100 new connections, replace vandalized pumps, electrical systems, and chlorination units, while enhancing solar hybrid power system to ensure sustainability. For Greenville, LWSC will rehabilitate and expand water system for city dwellers.
The project highlights the construction of 17.14 km of new transmission & distribution lines, rehabilitate the 350m³ elevated storage tank, install iron removal & chlorination systems and solar-powered pumps with generator backups. Pleebo City will experience a drill 3 high-yield boreholes with solar-powered pumps, the construction of a 350m³ steel water tower, lay 10 km of distribution pipelines, and establish 200+ household connections.
