Brief Profile of Hon. Mohammed Ali Managing Director, LWSC
Mohammed Ali, popularly known as Mo Ali, hails from Grand Cape Mount County and he is the son of Madam Jenneh Kanneh and the Late Mohammed A. Ali. He was born in Tubmanburg, Bomi County and did his elementary education in Tieni, Bo Waterside and Kongo, Mano River- all in Cape Mount County. As the Liberian civil crisis which began on December 24, 1989, raged on, Mo along with his foster father, mother and other family members sought refuge in Sierra Leone on July 26, 1990. He stayed in Sierra Leone for five years where he did his junior high school education at the Peninsula Secondary School in Waterloo, Sierra Leone.
In February 1995, Mr. Ali returned to Liberia and completed his high school education at the Seventh Day Adventist High School on Camp Johnson Road on August 3, 1998. On June 4, 1999, he enrolled at the University of Liberia where he studied and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree (Cum Laude) in Biology and Chemistry on February 22, 2006. In September 2013, Mohammed Ali enrolled at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom where he studied and graduated with a Master of Science degree (Merit) in Water, Sanitation and Health Engineering.
Mohammed Ali has about 20 years of work experience in both the private and public sectors. He has worked with several Non-Governmental Organizations including the Creative Associates International, Inc. (CAII), ActionAid Liberia International and WaterAid Liberia/Sierra Leone serving in various capacities. In the public sector, Mo Ali has served as County Development Officer for Grand Cape Mount County with the defunct Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs as well as the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP). Also at the MFDP, Mr. Ali served as Director for the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Unit at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning from October 5, 2015 to December 31, 2018.
While at the University of Liberia, Mo Ali became a member of the Student Unification Party (SUP). At the UL, Ali served Secretary General of the Biology Students Association, Secretary General of the Freshman Class and member of the Central Committee of SUP. During the 2005 Legislative and Presidential elections, Mo Ali who is a card bearing member of the Unity Party (UP) became the organizing Secretary of the Youths for Ellen’s Presidency (YEP) and played a major role in the campaign that saw the election of Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as the first female elected president of an African Country. During the 2011 Presidential and Legislative, Ali served as member of the Strategic Media Team and also played pivotal role in the re-election of President Sirleaf. In both elections’ runoff, the UP defeated the Congress for Democratic Change.
Upon the election of the Wilmot J. M. Paye’s leadership of the Unity Party in July 2016 at the Gbarnga Convention, Mohammed Ali was appointed as National Assistant Secretary General for Press Publicity and Outreach of the UP. In 2017, while serving as Assistant SG for the party, Mo Ali was appointed as National Campaign Spokesman of the UP 2017 Campaign during the 2017 Legislative and Presidential election. The UP lost the 2017 election in the runoff to the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) on December 26, 2017.
On September 8, 2020, Mohammed Ali was elected as National Secretary General of the Unity Party, a position he served until July 29, 2022. On July 2, 2023, Mo Ali was again named by Amb. Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. as the National Campaign Spokesman for the Unity Party Alliance Campaign in the 2023 Legislative and Presidential elections. The runoff election was again between the CDC and the UP and for the third time, the UP defeated the CDC in a presidential runoff election.
On February 27, 2024, Mohammed Ali was appointed as Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), a position he currently serves.
