AfDB Group Approves Funding To Improve Liberia’s Water Infrastructure

The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), on behalf of the Government of Liberia, has secured financing from the African Development Bank Group and the OPEC Fund to replace the main water transmission line serving Monrovia and surrounding communities. The Replacement of the Main Water Transmission Line Project will construct 15.2km of Ductile Iron (DI) pipes from McCauley Hill, Johnsonville, to Congo Town, opposite White Flower, outside Monrovia, thereby replacing the aging 36-inch pipeline that transmits treated water from the White Plains Water Treatment Plant to Monrovia and its environment.

The project will complement the 10km segment of the corridor already completed under the Liberia Urban Water Supply Project with funding from the World Bank. The project comprises two (2) main components, inclusive of the Infrastructure Development and the Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building.

Component 1 focuses on the construction of 15.2km of 48-inch DI transmission line. This includes Procurement & Installation of 10,000 smart prepaid meters; procurement & installation of two high-lift pumps at Airfield Gantry; and Procurement of engineering and consulting services.
Component 2 which encompasses Institutional Support & Project Management involves Project Management & Coordination; and Institutional Strengthening & Capacity Building.

The project responds to urgent infrastructure needs, aiming to improve access to safe water, enhance service reliability, and strengthen institutional efficiency.
