LWSC Resolves Critical Sewer Crisis Around Monrovia

The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has successfully responded to a critical section of the city’s sewer network along Water Street in the Waterside area, easing long-standing sanitation concerns in one of Monrovia’s busiest commercial zones.

LWSC notes the sewer situation at Waterside had posed serious challenges for marketers, commuters, and nearby businesses. The Corporation, however, confirmed that the issue has now been properly addressed, restoring cleanliness and safety to the area and improving conditions for daily trading and movement.

“Our team responded promptly and effectively to the situation on Water Street,” LWSC said, “We can safely say the problem has been handled in a way that ensures a cleaner and safer environment for marketers and commuters.” LWSC also disclosed that work is ongoing at other critical and high-risk sewer locations across the city as part of a broader effort to strengthen Monrovia’s sanitation infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Corporation has installed several new manhole culverts along Center Street in downtown Monrovia as part of continuing reconditioning works on the city’s sewer network.

The installations are aimed at rehabilitating aging sewer infrastructure and improving the efficiency of wastewater flow in one of the capital’s most heavily trafficked corridors. Center Street, home to major businesses and key government institutions, has long required improved sewer management to address recurring blockages and sanitation-related challenges.

LWSC explained that the newly installed manhole culverts will enhance access for routine maintenance, allow smoother sewer flow, and help prevent overflows, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. The Corporation noted that these upgrades are expected to contribute significantly to improved public health by reducing environmental contamination and strengthening overall urban sanitation. LWSC reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing Monrovia’s water and sewer systems through targeted infrastructure improvements.

Residents and business operators along Center Street and other affected areas have been urged to cooperate with ongoing works, which form part of a wider plan to ensure a cleaner, healthier city for all.
