Ali To Make A Strong Case For Liberia’s Water and Sanitation Crisis In Washington D.C

The Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), Mohammed Ali, is in Washington, D.C. to attend the 2026 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.

Held under the theme “Building Prosperity Through Policy,” the 2026 meetings are centered on navigating profound global shifts in geopolitics, trade, and technology, as well as addressing economic shocks linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

It is expected that policymakers, development experts, and financial leaders from across the globe will deliberate on strategies to stabilize economies and promote inclusive growth during this weeklong event in the United States.

Key events of the Spring gathering, which runs from April 13–18, 2026, include sessions of the Development Committee, the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), and a series of high-level forums focusing on international development, the global economy, and financial markets. These meetings provide a critical platform for countries like Liberia to engage international partners on pressing national and regional challenges.

While in Washington DC, MD Ali will participate in a closed-door business meeting on Water Security for Africa’s Future: A forward Look, expected to convene on the margins of this year’s Spring meetings of the IMF and the WB-G.

The urgency of such discussions is underscored by stark statistics: more than 400 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to safe drinking water, while over 700 million do not have adequate sanitation. Climate change continues to exacerbate the situation, with approximately one-quarter of Africa’s population already living under severe water stress.

Additionally, nearly 220 million people are affected by drought annually, alongside increasing flood risks across the continent. Against this backdrop, the Spring Meetings present an important opportunity for African leaders to advocate for increased investment, policy reform, and innovative solutions in the water sector.

Observers note that Liberia, still rebuilding its infrastructure following years of conflict and underinvestment, stands to benefit significantly from strengthened international partnerships.

It is expected that MD Ali will use the platform to make a compelling case for Liberia’s water and sanitation priorities, highlighting ongoing challenges such as limited access in rural communities, aging infrastructure, and the need for climate-resilient systems. The water and sewer boss is also anticipated to seek technical and financial support to expand sustainable water services nationwide.

Officials at LWSC say the Managing Director’s participation reflects Liberia’s commitment to aligning its development agenda with global efforts to ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation—key components of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
